PURCHASING MOTOR ART

By David Purvis ~ Past Chairman The Guild of Motoring Artists

Selecting art of any kind should be a pleasurable and involving process, the ultimate aim being to delight the purchaser with something that is unique and offers a personal creation of an event or scene that will give pleasure over many years. Serious collectors may look upon their purchases more as a form of investment or as custodians of outstanding pieces of art that will provide pleasure for future generations. Motoring art should be no different. However it is in a very limited market - even though good art should transcend subject matter (the ultimate satisfaction for a motoring artist should be for a non-motoring enthusiast to purchase a painting for its artistic merit alone).

To help the purchase process for newcomers into this market and to avoid some of the pitfalls, the following advise should make the selection as rewarding as possible.

THE ARTIST ~ Try and establish what qualifications, art college or commercial art training the artist has. If they belong to an acknowledged guild or society they will have achieved artistic standards that will be measured by their respective committees. The Guild of Motoring Artists has a strict selection process, together with an exhibition selection process. It has a global membership of over 100 amateur & professional members, and has its own website – www.motorart.co.uk Additionally membership of transport related art guilds such as The Guild of Aviation Artist’s GavA, or the Guild of Railway Artist’s GRA can add an experienced dimension to an artist’s portfolio.

Any Guild member should be able to provide an art cv that covers published works, notable commissions and major exhibitions or events they have exhibited at such as the Coys Historic Festival at Silverstone, Goodwood Festival of Speed, Donington, Beaulieu, private galleries or notable exhibitions overseas such as Pebble Beach or Monaco. All of this will cement an opinion on their commercial and peer group acceptance. This will have a direct influence on price. CLICK ON PAGE TWO BUTTONPLEASE CLICK ON PAGE TWO BUTTON TO CONTINUE
